Set in the heart of Somerset, The Castle Hotel in Taunton is a Grade II listed building steeped in history. With 44 bedrooms, two restaurants and facilities for weddings, parties and conferences, the hotel has been offering high standards of service to guests for over 60 years.

The Castle Hotel has a robust environmental policy covering hotel supplies through to energy management. To help meet these commitments, iESCo was appointed to investigate the feasibility of installing powerPerfector technology on the premises.

With the installation of a 175kVA powerPerfector unit, energy savings were estimated at 8%, reducing the total electricity consumption in addition to improving power factor and extending the lifespan of hotel equipment.

In this case, all preparatory work was carried out in normal working hours to ensure that the final changeover onto an optimised supply was as quick as possible. Working with the client we arranged a site shut down at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon, in order to minimise disruption to hotel operations.

As site voltages reached as high as 245V, powerPerfector technology was able to significantly reduce the hotels running costs and carbon footprint. This substantial reduction resulted in savings that exceeded the estimations provided by iESCo and Carbon Trust, with a 10% energy saving and more than £1,000 annual savings on top of the original figures. This difference had a positive effect on the payback time, reducing it to generate a surplus of savings during the loan repayment period.
